Winter Wellness
By Shambrekiá Wise
Winter can present unique challenges for those living with multiple sclerosis, but it also offers opportunities to adjust routines and embrace new ways of staying healthy and active. Thankfully, the
heat
is the bane of my existence, but winds off Lake Michigan can be brutal without MS. With a few thoughtful strategies (because we can’t carry around igloos), you can maintain your well-being even during the coldest months.
Explore new ways to stay active indoors
When the
weather outside is too harsh
, it’s the perfect time to explore new indoor activities that keep you moving. Dance-based workouts are a fun way to stay fit in a small space, while resistance training with light weights or bands helps maintain muscle strength and tone. Virtual fitness classes or online workout groups can also offer a sense of community and motivation, making exercise more enjoyable and consistent. As I type this, I already have my heater on, so I’m pretty sure I will be taking this advice for myself.
Stay connected with loved ones
Social connections are vital for emotional well-being, especially during winter when it’s easy to feel isolated. Make an effort to stay in touch with family and friends through regular phone calls, video chats, or even socially distanced visits. Hosting a virtual get-together can be a fun way to break up the winter monotony and share some laughter and good company.
Staying connected
helps maintain a positive outlook and provides support when needed. This is one of the few good things that came out of the pandemic for our family. Even though we are spread across the country, we now have regular game nights, which, unfortunately, I rarely win.
Prepare for winter-specific challenges
Cold weather
can bring specific challenges for those with MS, such as increased muscle stiffness or difficulty moving safely on icy surfaces. Preparing your home and routine for these challenges can make a big difference. Ensure your living space is warm and free from drafts, and consider investing in nonslip mats or footwear with good traction to prevent falls. Being active in managing these challenges can help you feel more confident and safe during the winter months.
Winter, while unpredictable, can still be manageable and as enjoyable as a (much colder) spring day (minus the
allergies
). Adapting to the season in a way that supports your overall health and well-being can be a game changer, so start on your plan early if you must. You’re not alone and we are always here to offer guidance in any way we can. In the meantime, order those blankets and stock up on herbal teas.
Stay warm and cozy.
