Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. The hallmark of MS is the immune system mistakenly attacking the protective covering of nerve fibers, known as myelin. This damage disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body and can lead to brain atrophy (shrinkage) over time. Understanding how MS affects brain health and what can be done to protect it is crucial for maintaining cognitive and physical well-being.
How MS affects brain health
People with MS often experience
cognitive changes
, such as difficulties with
memory
, attention, or processing speed. These challenges are linked to the inflammation and subsequent damage caused by the disease. Studies show that brain atrophy occurs at a faster rate in people with MS compared to the general population, highlighting the importance of proactive brain health strategies.
Tips for better brain health
Stay physically active:
Regular exercise
